Digestive Diseases - The Main Symptoms of GERD Explained

A patient that experiences acid reflux more than two times a week is considered to have GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). This is one of the most common digestive diseases. It is not considered serious as it does not affect the overall health of the sufferer at least in the short term. However, its symptoms can cause major discomfort and even disrupt the daily life of the person. Find out all about the symptoms of this condition so that you know when to see a doctor.

Heartburn is the main symptom of GERD. This symptom is often used interchangeably with the name of the condition. This is because heartburn is easy to feel and can cause great discomfort. In its essence, heartburn is a burning pain. It usually occurs in the abdomen and moves to the area right under the middle of the rib cage. Then it goes up the chest and may reach the throat. The pain may be mild, moderate or severe. In case of severe heartburn, the sufferer may mistake it even for a heart attack.

Regurgitation is another common symptom of GERD. This symptom is particularly unpleasant. You feel the stomach acid, which is sour in taste, going up your throat. It may even reach the mouth. You experience a strong burning sensation which goes away slowly.

Bloating is experienced by many people suffering from GERD. Your stomach feels as if it is filled with air. It may feel heavy and painful as well. Bloating usually goes away a couple of hours after it occurs, but in some cases it may be more persistent. It can be accompanied by burping, which is annoying and can be quite embarrassing in public. The sufferer may experience persistent hiccups as well.

People with GERD may feel as if food is stuck in their throat. This symptom occurs when the esophagus becomes narrow. If acid reflux is persistent, symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, hoarseness and sore threat can occur as well. This digestive disease may also lead to weight loss if it is not diagnosed and treated timely.

In severe cases of GERD, sufferers may experience nausea. Sometimes the nausea is accompanied by vomiting. Blood traces may be found in the vomit. Blood may be present in the stools as well.

You should not wait for the symptoms of GERD to become severe and/or chronic. Make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as you experience any of them. If the condition is diagnosed timely, it can be treated successfully.
